Wyoming in Chamonix Sud
The family behind Bighorn Bistro brought more than recipes when they moved to Chamonix from the American West. The interior (mounted horns, barn wood, the general feel of a saloon that has seen some winters) came from Cody, Wyoming and Jackson Hole. It sits in Place Edmond Desailloud, one of the pedestrian squares in Chamonix Sud that has quietly become one of the better places to spend an evening in the resort.
Run by Susan and her family, who grew up skiing and climbing the Chamonix valley, Bighorn has been part of what locals describe as the regeneration of Chamonix Sud, alongside Beckett and Wilde, South Bar and Monkey Bar in the same square. Four very different places. The combination works.
The food
American comfort food done properly, with a clear European edit. The burgers are made from fresh cuts and served on brioche buns baked in-house each morning. The ribs are smoked low. The Philly cheesesteak has a following. The mac and cheese (a dish that is extremely easy to get wrong) is consistently praised in reviews. Bread, tortillas, desserts: all baked that morning, every day.
The vegan menu runs deeper than most places manage. The dragon bowl, the cauliflower popcorn, the vegan focaccia roll and a quinoa burger have drawn regulars who came for the craft beer and stayed for the food. There is also a lentil soup that one reviewer described as beautifully presented but aggressively committed to coconut milk.
The bar
The beer list is the most serious in Chamonix Sud. Craft beers on tap and in bottle, artisanal cocktails (the Bloody Mary is specifically mentioned in almost every review), a non-alcoholic ginger beer cocktail with tequila, mint and lemon that several people have written at length about. Happy hour runs Wednesday to Sunday from 15:00 to 17:00: 3.50 euros for a pilsner pint, 5 euros for local craft beer, Aperol spritz, G&T, or an alcohol-free cocktail.
