L'Index: the most popular restaurant in Chamonix right now

L'Index sits at the top of TripAdvisor Chamonix with a 4.8-star average across 314 reviews. It holds a Maître Restaurateur title and appears in the Gault & Millau 2024 guide. The address, 309 Promenade des Crémeries, puts it in the Bois du Bouchet forest, roughly 15 minutes' walk from the town centre. This is not a location you stumble into.

What to know before you go

The building has been on this site since 1932, when it was a crémerie (dairy shop). The current kitchen runs a bistronomic format: three surprise menus based on whatever local produce arrived that morning. The menu is not available in advance. The Brévent (3 courses, €58), Flégère (5 courses, €70) and Index (7 courses, €85) menus change daily. Every ingredient comes from farms in the Savoie valleys.

One detail that comes up in several reviews: a reviewer mentions snails with smoked milk and paper-thin mushrooms, another describes local trout with roasted carrots and cream sauce, accompanied by mashed potatoes served for the whole table. The wine list runs to over 500 references. The kitchen is explicitly not vegan-friendly, as the cooking uses butter throughout.

They also feed their organic kitchen waste to a pair of pigs named Peggy and Kermite in the yard behind the building. Dinner Monday to Friday from 19:00, Saturday and Sunday lunch from 12:00 and dinner from 18:30. Booking recommended.

Le Monchu: the institution with a name that means 'tourist'

Le Monchu on rue du Lyret opened in 1972. Over fifty years and more than 2,200 TripAdvisor reviews later, it remains the highest-volume restaurant in Chamonix by a significant margin. The building was constructed from the materials of an 18th-century Savoyard farm and the interior continues to reflect that origin.

The etymology and the raclette

The name deserves mention. 'Monchu' is local Chamonix dialect, coined in the 1800s, a corruption of 'Monsieur' used to describe tourists arriving in the valley. The restaurant named itself after the people it was built to feed. It is an honest piece of branding.

The kitchen built its reputation on raclette cooked over traditional coal-fired racletos: ancestral equipment that heats the cheese from below with wood fire rather than the electric units most restaurants use today. Reviewers specifically mention this as the reason the raclette here tastes different from other places. The menu also covers pierrade (hot stone cooking at the table), brasérade, tartiflette, fondue savoyard and bistro dishes. 230 seats across two levels, 120 on the heated terrace. Open every day.

Cool Cats: number one for quick bites

Cool Cats ranks first in the Quick Bites category on TripAdvisor Chamonix with 464 reviews. It is a small restaurant in the town centre, and most of the reviews mention two things: the hot dogs and the fries. Multiple reviewers describe the fries as the best thing they ate in Chamonix. There is live music, the place is dog-friendly (the venue photos include several dogs), and it runs private catering. Open for lunch and dinner.

Bighorn Bistro: number 5 overall, genuine and available on Mountly

Bighorn Bistro at 77 Place Edmond Desailloud ranks fifth on TripAdvisor for Chamonix overall and has over 3,400 Google reviews at 4.6. These are not numbers that get manufactured; they accumulate over years of repeat visits and word of mouth. It is one of the few restaurants in Chamonix Sud that draws visitors specifically to that area rather than just serving people who are already there.

The food, the bar and the setting

Run by an American family from Wyoming, the interior (mounted antlers, barn wood, fireplace) came from Cody and Jackson Hole rather than a French decor supplier. The kitchen does American comfort food: burgers on brioche baked in-house, slow-cooked ribs, Philly cheesesteak, mac and cheese. The craft beer list and cocktail selection are the most serious in Chamonix Sud. The vegan menu is deeper than most: dragon bowl, cauliflower popcorn, quinoa burger.

Yumidori: the world-ranked specialist

Yumidori does not have the review volume of Le Monchu or the TripAdvisor rank of L'Index. What it has is Jérémi Seguda, a chef from Vallorcine in the Chamonix valley who placed second at the World Sushi Cup in Tokyo in 2024 and serves as a competition judge at the French and European championships.

The menu is Japanese-inspired: maki, bowls, udon, Japanese curry, chirashi. Vegan and gluten-free options throughout. Open daily 11:30 to 21:30 at 52 avenue Ravanel le Rouge. Available on Mountly for delivery.
